BACKGROUND
The Committee on Homeland Security will meet in open session to consider
"The Border Security and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2005," H.R. 4312.
Chairman Peter T. King (R-NY) introduced the bipartisan bill to enhance
security along America's borders and ensure the removal of aliens who
attempt to enter the United States illegally.
Key provisions in the bill include: establishing operational control of all
borders and ports through enhanced Border Patrol operations, physical
barriers, and state-of-the-art technology; ending the "catch and release"
practice along the southwest border; streamlining operations within the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) border security agencies; and
promoting both international and domestic policies that will deter further
illegal entry into the United States.
Subcommittee for Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and
Cybersecurity Chairman Dan Lungren (R-CA) and Subcommittee Ranking Member
Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) are original cosponsors of the legislation.
