Australian Market's four-month low

April 18, 2005 -- THE Australian stock market plunged today, shedding more than 1 per cent as it continued the downward slide suffered by equity markets around the globe.

The local indices finished below the 4000 mark to close at their lowest level since December.

Investors had expected a bad day after Wall Street tumbled on Friday night, along with most other major overseas markets, and Asian markets also fell today.

The weakness has affected all major sectors and comes on top of last week's sell off that saw Australia's stock market record its sharpest pull back in more than two years.
