Gov. Strickland Signs Pickens Pledge Joining More Than 1,000,000 Americans Who Want to Break Our Addiction to Foreign Oil

October 16, 2008 – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today signed the pledge to join T. Boone Pickens’ campaign to break America’s addiction to foreign oil.

“I believe that the Pickens Plan can realistically reduce our energy dependency in the next decade,” said Strickland. “As Governor, I’ve signed legislation that establishes Ohio’s first advanced energy portfolio standard—utilizing resources within our state rather than from overseas. But one governor can’t go it alone; I applaud Boone Pickens for building an army—one million strong—and elevating this issue into the national debate.”

“Governor Strickland is a leader who has shown true foresight in advancing energy policy rooted in alternative and renewable sources,” Pickens said. “Ohio has become increasingly aggressive in modernizing energy standards under his leadership, providing new jobs and securing affordable and stable domestic resources that will help decrease the country’s 70% dependency on foreign oil imports. I salute the Governor for his leadership—he will be a valuable member of my army as we work with the next President and Congress to enact real energy reform.”

Pickens and Strickland met in Columbus earlier this month to discuss the details of the Pickens Plan.

The Pickens Pledge reads:

We will no longer stand by and watch as America’s national security and economy become more dependent on the unstable foreign nations that we rely on for nearly 70% of the oil we use each day.

We spend nearly $700 billion every year buying foreign oil, which represents the greatest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind.

The new President and the 111th Congress need to enact an energy plan that reduces our foreign oil dependence by at least 30% within ten years.

This plan must include proven American technology and resources; the development of new energy sources; and the expansion and modernization of the national electrical grid to transport renewable energy to homes and businesses.

Delaying any further means tacit support for continuing America’s addiction to foreign oil.

I join with T. Boone Pickens and his army of supporters in calling for an Energy Independence Plan to be enacted within the first 100 days of the new administration.

Unveiled on July 8, 2008 by T. Boone Pickens, the Pickens Plan is detailed solution for ending the United States’ growing dependence on foreign oil, which costs the country $700 billion per year. The plan calls for investing in power generation from domestic renewable resources such as wind and using our abundant supplies of natural gas as a transportation fuel, replacing more than one-third of our imported and saving more than $230 billion a year.

More than 1,000,000 people have joined the Pickens Army through the website www.pickensplan.com , which has had over 10,000,000 hits. For more information on the Pickens Plan please visit our website
