Welcome to this week's edition of Driving Green at InvestorIdeas.com with host Dawn Van Zant.
Last week the Detroit Auto Show showcased the latest innovation in green technology in autos. As green and environmental issues are more and more important to consumers and as gas prices threaten higher levels, most Auto makers have new green innovation as part of their portfolio, from hybrids, to electric, to fuel cells.
What was on view? All the dealers had something green, something new. From the Saturn Vue Green Line, to the Cadillac Escalade SUV two-mode hybrids from General Motors Corp., to a Mercedes-Benz ML450 hybrid sport utility, green was there to be seen!
Chrysler had several new concept cars in their line from the ecoVoyager Concept, Electric Vehicle with Fuel Cell Range Extender , to the Jeep Renegade Concept, Electric Vehicle with BLUETEC Diesel Range Extender to the Dodge ZEO Concept,, Electric Vehicle with 250-mile all-electric range, Four-passenger "2+2" sports car .
Ford’s EcoBoost is a new engine technology that will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy on half a million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles annually in North America during the next five years, and it’s the keystone of Ford’s sustainability program.
According to Ford , “EcoBoost is a combination of direct injection and turbocharging, boosting 4 and 6 cylinder engines. With direct injection, fuel is injected into each cylinder of an engine in small, precise amounts. Compared to conventional port injection, direct injection produces a cooler, denser charge, delivering higher fuel economy and performance.
“EcoBoost can be applied across a wide variety of engine types in a range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks – and it’s affordable,” says Kuzak, stressing Ford’s desire to make an impact across its entire product line, not just “a few thousand vehicles” that make headlines but are not widely available.”
Ford will launch EcoBoost with the new Lincoln MKS flagship in 2009, followed by the Ford Flex and other vehicles. By 2013, Ford will have more than half a million EcoBoost-powered vehicles on the road.
So what does all this mean to consumers and investors? … More and better technology choices. It is becoming easier to make green choices and even more so as the auto leaders roll out the green vehicles of the future. Whether you choose a hybrid, fuel cell, electric or simply a really fuel efficient new car like the BMW Mini, you are taking major steps to improving and changing our current emissions and ultimately impacting global warming.
