Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE: TM) recently released a publication entitled "Sustainability Report 2007: A New Future for People, Society and the Planet" which summarizes the results of their corporate activities in 2006 from environmental, social and economic aspects.

Under the environmental aspects, themes include energy and global warming, recycling of resources, substances of concern and atmospheric quality.

The number of Toyota vehicles that meet or surpass the Ultra Low-Emissions Vehicle level reached 97.7% of total production in 2006, up 1.4 percentage points from the previous year.

More evidence of the automotive sector towards going green - the car rental industry is increasing the number of hybrids and green cars available to consumers requesting eco friendly choices.

The driving forces to go green are being felt on a global basis, as our China–Asia portal commented today on hybrid and electric cars penetrating China’s markets. Reference article: Driving Green in China Towards a New Generation of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles as

In India, the momentum is also underway with Reva Electric Car and Tata Motors Ltd. set to introduce hybrids, electric and biofuel options.

Another interesting development in the green automotive space - Ontario's Liberal Environment Minister announced proposed incentives for motorists that go green. Environmentally friendly motorists would be issued eco-license plates that entitle users to possible benefits including free parking and access to high-capacity commuter lanes. The new green plates, which are anticipated to hit the roads next spring contingent to the Ontario Liberals, are voted back in.

Reading through news headlines each week, it is clear we are shifting gears to greener roads in the future as new developments and incentives are announced more frequently.
