Driving Green, Climate Change Finding the Balance in Biofuels and Global Water Concerns

August 17, 2007

Welcome to this week's edition of Driving Green at InvestorIdeas.com

By Dawn Van Zant

In my first intro Driving Green Podcast I touched on biofuels and the total green cycle and the concern of farm chemicals sprayed on crops and in particular corn crops and the run off into the water systems and some of the consequences on both wildlife and human life.

Now bigger concerns about the relationships between biofuels and water are being discussed and brought forward by 2007 World Water in Stockholm and the International Water Management Institute. Key global markets addressed are China and India that are already addressing current and future water problems where concerns are being expressed that China and India's biofuel production could result is water scarcity by 2030.

Charlotte de Fraiture, scientist with the International Water Management Institute, who was part of a 5 year study, was quoted as saying - "It's not that I'm saying don't go for biofuels. It's just that India and China are two water-short countries…. if they pursue their biofuel plans as they are on the table now, they will definitely be in the red zone in water terms." The concerns about water use for biofuel crops is more about future numbers based on anticipated growth and demands than current production. It creates an environmental and sustainability catch 22. How do we address the greenhouse gas emissions caused by fossil fuels and find environmental alternatives, but not deplete or damage other critical resources in the process?

I think this question will surface again in other areas - not just biofuels.

The theme of the upcoming annual 2007 World Water Week event in Stockholm is “Progress and Prospects on Water: Striving for Sustainability in a Changing World."

So, this is not a Podcast to bash biofuels- it’s just a reminder to all renewable and green alternative investors and consumers to look at the big picture and the full cycle – a theme that I will touch on again and again within Driving Green.
