Ford Motor Co . (NYSE: F) set a speed record set last week with the Ford Fusion Hydrogen 999 prototype fuel-cell car, reaching 207.297 mph. This development could accelerate the use of fuel cell technology in its vehicles. The prototype is powered by hydrogen and an electric motor.
BMW ( Berlin: BMW.BE) recently announced the launch of the Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program and gave the keys of a BMW Hydrogen 7, the first hydrogen-powered luxury sedan, to Hollywood’s well loved actor Will Ferrell. The BMW Hydrogen 7 is not currently for sale, but BMW plans to give industry leaders, prominent figures in entertainment, politics and business a BMW Hydrogen 7. Another high profile celebrity, Brad Pitt was behind the wheel of the new BMW which was showcased at the recent premiere of Ocean’s 13 in LA. In launching the program, BMW makes clear that the BMW Hydrogen 7 is not a concept car, but is now a production model vehicle that has completed the entire Product Development Process, meeting all the standards necessary for driving on U.S. roadways. Running in hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapor, representing a major step in reducing harmful CO2 emissions. Throughout the program, 25 of the 100 cars that are produced will be used in evaluation programs in the US. As part of their commitment, BMW announced earlier in August, the successful completion of an eight-week test period of the BMW Hydrogen 7, a collaboration of BMW of North America and NASA . So expect to hear more on celebrity sightings and developments in the fuel cell car markets -they may be closer than we think.
